Animal
neurology

Diseases of the nervous system – whether involving the brain, spinal cord, or nerves – are often frightening for both pets and their owners, as they may unexpectedly affect the animal’s movement, balance, and even behavior (for example, seizures or paralysis).

At EriVet, we focus specifically on neurological conditions. Our goal is to identify the exact underlying cause of the problem and create a treatment plan that helps restore your pet’s quality of life whenever possible.

When to schedule a neurological consultation?

Problems affecting the nervous system can present in many different ways. We recommend scheduling a neurological consultation if you notice any of the following symptoms in your pet:

  • seizures;
  • balance disorders or coordination problems;
  • abnormal posture or head tilt;
  • tremors or muscle twitching;
  • weakness or difficulty moving;
  • dragging of hind paws or paralysis;
  • severe and persistent pain (especially in the back or neck area);
  • changes in behavior or state of consciousness.

Neurological examination

Every accurate diagnosis begins with a thorough neurological examination. During the appointment, the veterinarian evaluates the animal’s movement, coordination, reflexes, pain perception, and responses to external stimuli.

This is a painless but important procedure that helps determine the location of the problem and decide whether additional diagnostic tests are needed.

Neurological diagnostics

Diagnosing complex neurological conditions requires specialized equipment. At EriVet, we offer a wide range of diagnostic capabilities on-site:

  • Blood tests – to assess overall health and inflammation;
  • X-ray examinations – for initial evaluation of the spine and skeletal system;
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) – the gold standard for evaluating soft tissues of the brain and spinal cord (including nerves and intervertebral discs);
  • Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis – to identify inflammation and infections affecting the central nervous system;
  • Electrodiagnostics and biopsies – for diagnosing specific muscle and nerve disorders.

Treatment of neurological conditions

Every treatment plan is individualized and depends on the diagnosis. In many cases, conservative (medical) treatment is sufficient, meaning oral and injectable medications combined with physiotherapy.

If the condition requires surgical treatment, we offer advanced neurosurgical procedures at our clinic.

Neurosurgery

EriVet has extensive experience and strong technical capabilities for performing complex neurosurgical procedures. Surgery is often indicated in cases of:

  • intervertebral disc herniation;
  • vertebral fractures and spinal instability;
  • brain and nerve tumors;
  • hydrocephalus requiring shunt placement.

BAER hearing test

We perform official BAER (Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response) hearing tests, which allow for an objective assessment of an animal’s hearing ability and the diagnosis of deafness.

Official testing is available for puppies and kittens from 8 weeks of age, as the auditory system is not yet fully developed at a younger age.
